Testing the Battery in Your Car Safely with a Voltmeter

Testing the power in your vehicle is easy, that is if you know how to use a voltmeter correctly. Before you do any type work near the car battery, it is important you are wearing work gloves and a good pair of protective eye-wear.

The lights and engine of the car need to be off before the testing can begin. The voltmeter is simple to use because it only has two cables, red and black. Red goes on the positive end of the car battery terminal first; then you can safely secure the black cable to the negative terminal of the battery.

The meter will show the reading at 12.4 or higher when the battery in the car still has plenty of charging power left. It's when the meter shows 12.2 or lower you need to get the battery checked or replaced.
