Stay on Top of Your Vehicle’s Differential Needs

Cleaning the differential could one of the most challenging things you can do on your car. However, it’s pretty easy if you know what to look for. Once you’ve drained the old oil, assume that the remaining oil is contaminated with metal shavings.

The first step would be to wipe out the remaining oil from the wet housing cover and the gears. It is important to ensure you have removed as much oil as you can because metal shavings often times hide in crannies and nooks. Also, clean the fill-hole plug, and use a magnet to grab as much fine metal particles as possible.

Since most people like using cleaners, we highly discourage the use of harsh cleaners, because the residue could affect your new oil. Use a light abrasive pad or razor scraper to clean the mating surface of the cover and housing.
